Steps to Take If Your Cat Goes Missing
If your cat is an indoor-only cat, you want to remember an important fact: They are scared! Most times indoor cats go into a flight or freeze survival mode. They might not recognize you or your voice. Do not take it personally, they are scared.
List of steps to take if your cat gets lost outside your home:
- Look around your home. Try, as best as you can, to stay calm. They will feel your fear and it can add to their own fear.
- Reach out to your neighbors to watch for your cat. Ask them to check their security cameras, as well as sheds, garages, and basements.
- Post a picture and information on your local town social media pages.
- Call your area veterinarians, town (and bordering towns) Animal Control Officer, any area shelters and rescues.
- You can also email these locations directly with a picture and information.
- Use online pet locator resources to help in your search. The following sites allow you to make a lost cat flyer which will be emailed to animal rescues, animal controls and veterinarians.
- If you can, set up outside cameras around your home to watch to see if your cat is in the area.
- Put out food during the day time only. Take up the food overnight. You do not want to attract wildlife, especially if your cat is nearby.
- If you have sightings of your cat near your home or at a neighbor’s, you can try to use a cat-safe trap. **If you use a trap, make sure you are checking the trap frequently.
- For more information on trapping, please call the MetroWest Humane Society (508-875-3776) or your local shelter.
- Once your cat is found, bring him/her to your veterinarian to have a good exam, even if all seems ok. It is always best to make sure your cat was not injured and they are safe from illnesses.
